The Prehistoric Heritage of Modern Mata Ortiz Pottery @ Sedona Heritage Museum
Nov 27 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Mata Ortiz4 Paquimé, Chihuahua, Mexico is the most important archaeological site in the American Southwest and northern Mexico.  Traders from this ancient city greatly influenced the Anasazi, Hohokam, and Mogollon cultures of the Southwest. Pottery from this site was the inspiration for modern Mata Ortiz ceramics.  John Bezy, who has worked with the potters of Mata Ortiz for nearly 30 years, will discuss the archaeology of Paquime and the evolution of today’s world-class pottery.
Master artist Oralia Lopez will demonstrate how the pottery is painted, and a good selection of Mata Ortiz pottery will be available for purchase after the presentation.
From 1:30-3:00 p.m., Bezy will sign copies of his new book “The Mogollon Rim, Arizona: Geology, Vegetation, Wildlife”; it is a comprehensive exploration of the natural history of the Mogollon Rim region—from Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon to Payson and Show Low. Technically sound, the book is written in a clear, easy to comprehend style for readers who may not have formal training in geology and ecology. It is lavishly illustrated with color photos, satellite images, and diagrams. The book focuses on geologic processes that have shaped the beautiful and varied landscape.
