John Bezy, geologist and co-author of “The Artistry and History of Mata Ortiz,” has worked with the potters of Mata Ortiz for 30 years. He will offer a presentation on the inspiration, history, and appreciation of this unique regional art form at the Museum on Monday, March 19, at 11 a.m.
Artist Oralia Lopez has set the standard in Mata Ortiz for finely executed geometric pottery designs and will be bringing some of her pottery for sale at prices similar to direct prices in her village.
Join the Museum for this popular program and pottery sale. This is a free event open to the public.
All veterans, active military, family and friends, and residents who want to show their appreciation to those who have served and are now serving are invited to be guests of the Museum at Sedona’s annual memorial and program of appreciation.
This year’s program will be overseen by emcee Shondra Jepperson. She and Tom Jepperson will provide patriotic and inspirational music.
During the program, the Museum will premier a new original video, “Tribute to the Greatest Generation”, honoring those who lived through the hardships of both the Great Depression and WWII. The video is a patriotic tribute using original interviews of Sedonans who fought in the war, as well as the workers whose labor provided the essential materiel and services in support of them. Those individuals featured use their own words and stories to impart their experiences of sacrifice and courage. Interviews by the Museum of these history-makers were edited for this inspiring video.
The program will continue with dignitaries including Mayor Sandy Moriarty, Coconino County Supervisor Matt Ryan and Yavapai County Supervisor Randy Garrison. Sedona Boy Scout Troop 48 will perform flag presentation services. A representative from Congressman Tom O’Halleran’s office will be on-site with information for veteran’s about programs and services available to them.
Additionally, members from several organizations that provide services to veterans will be on hand to answer questions and distribute information, including VFW assistance and “Buddy” poppies programs, Vietnam Veterans of America (claims assistance, advocacy, basic health/clothing/transportation, etc.), Sedona Elks Lodge (an extensive list of veterans programs including honor trips, yoga and assisting homeless vets), Mental Health Coalition, MATForce addiction and recovery programs, Habitat for Humanity’s “Veterans Build program, Verde Valley Humane Society (Pets for Patriots) and SedonaKind. The Sedona Oak Creek DAR chapter will provide the Parade of flags at the Museum entrance.
The program will be held in the Museum’s historic fruit packing shed. Lunch will be served after the program with food by The Golden Goose. Shuttle service will be provided from nearby parking lots.
The day’s events are underwritten by the City of Sedona, the Sedona Heritage Museum and Herb and Joan Miller. The program, refreshments and Museum admission will be free.
Keep cozy by the fire in the Museum’s historic Jordan House red rock fireplace as you enjoy this dramatic reading of the Dickens classic by local award-winning actor Michael Peach.
In lieu of paid admissions, each guest is asked to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Sedona Food Bank.
